Heathrow Airport Hotel Guide For The Leisure Traveller

November 30, 2009 by stephotel

Heathrow Airport london is the busiest international airport in the world. Around 35% of its passengers are transit passengers, i.e. passengers that are just using london to make connections.

Just one reason why there are nearly 40 airport hotels at Heathrow serving the local demand for overnight stopovers.

For many of these hotels the businessman with an expense account is their bread and butter. This article seeks to address the leisure traveller, providing a guide to getting value for money locating a bed at Heathrow.

Well start off by dividing the hotels into three categories.

There are the large 4 and 5 star chain hotels like Hilton, Radisson and Sheraton aimed at the businessmen, typically charging $US200 during the week, half that at weekends.

Then there are the 2 and 3 star hotels, again mostly chains, like Comfort Inn, Ibis and Premier Travel Inn, aimed at the leisure traveller and the businessmen on a budget. These will typically charge just over $US100 during the week, about $US75 at weekends.

Lastly, there are the small independent local hotels, mostly family owned who offer cheap bed and breakfast?style rooms. These have the cheapest accommodation.

Room rates can seem good value, especially at weekends when the businessmen are away and everyone deep discounts to fill beds. However, beware, what the hotel doesnt get in room rates theyll try and get out of you in other ways.

There are no hotels in the central passenger area where Terminals 1, 2 and 3 are located, though there is a hotel linked to Terminal 4 on the south side of the airport ?the expensive Hilton Hotel, not for most leisure travellers.

This means a bus transfer, and unlike most international airports there are no complimentary hotel transfer buses. The airport authority provides Hoppa Buses? mid-size buses that run every 10-20 minutes on fixed routes to Heathrow Hotels. At 3 GBP per person per journey, thats an extra $US20 for a couple staying at a Heathrow Hotel.

Most hotels will charge anything from $US10-$US30 for breakfast, and at most hotels there isnt viable competition outside the front door. Dinner is similarly expensive and entertainment is largely limited to an expensive bar.

So, tips for the leisure traveller trying to economise.

Look for a hotel on the Bath Road, this is the northern perimeter road of Heathrow Airport and the main hotel strip.

Public buses run more frequently than the Hoppa Buses along the Bath Road into Heathrow Terminals, and theyre free. (The fees from the Hoppa Buses are part used to subsidise the free local buses).

The Bath Road is the only location where you can escape your hotel. There is a pub serving meals, 2 McDonalds, a bowling alley, a small supermarket and an Italian Restaurant that can provide breakfasts, snacks and meals on the Bath Road. There are also 24 hour public buses running to local towns Kingston and Hounslow for entertainment.

Taking the above together, the benchmark for the leisure traveller is the Ibis and Premier Travel Inn hotels.

The other local option is to consider local Bed & Breakfast hotels. These do not provide an airport transfer but many are on the periphery of the airport on a bus or underground route. Their room rates are similar to the budget hotels but this includes a hearty breakfast and the transfer is still cheaper than the Hoppa Bus.

One other option is to forget Heathrow altogether and overnight in Central london. The Heathrow Express takes just 15 minutes to Londons Paddington Station and there is lots of cheap accommodation around the station. Youll certainly have a more entertaining evening in London than at an airport hotel, and at a similar overall price.

Located just a short drive from the capital city, new delhi and close to agra (home to the Taj Mahal), the royal city of Jaipur (also known as The Pink City?due to the predominant colour of its buildings), is well established as one of the most romantic places on earth to get married. From the rich history of its palaces to the gorgeous landscaped gardens of the luxury hotels to the serenity of the floating palace on Ramgarh Lakeeverywhere you look there is pinkthe colour of romance.

Jaipur is the throbbing, vibrant capital city of the colourful state of Rajasthan where the regal ambience of yesteryear is still felt throughout the citys numerous carved arches and once-bejewelled fortress walls. Enter this mystical city through a narrow, cobbled street where street vendors selling everything from sweetmeats to silver trinkets and leather slippers call out to passing trade. Pass the huge hill on the right with its stunning royal residence where decorated elephants obediently transport delighted tourists to the top for its amazing vistas of the city spread out below. Follow the winding road until you begin to see the glittering lights of the citys numerous palaces begin to emerge on the left hand side across the glistening waters of the Ramgarh Lake. Stop to take pictures or simply gaze in stunned silence at the beauty of the floating palace of Ramgarh ?perfectly illuminated by golden lights strategically placed on all four corners of the palace.

And then comes the main citysurprisingly wide, clean roads with some of the most well known brand names dotted on each sidefrom the newly opened Hilton Trident to the Sheraton and Le Meridienyou will find a massive choice of premium accommodation in Jaipur. Each hotel has retained the citys former glory and royal demeanour and the service excels itself. Just remember to book your stay well in advance to avoid disappointment, as it is busy year round in this city of royal romance. The opulence of both hotels will literally take your breath away and many a wedding takes place in the perfectly landscaped grounds of these hotels with their backdrop of lush palms and fountains.

A quick tip: whether staying at the Rambagh Palace or not, do take time to enjoy the delicious al-fresco breakfast buffet where the smart Jodhpur & waistcoat clad staff will treat you like royalty. With eggs made to order and succulent sausages and bacon following plates of the freshest, sweetest fruits, the plump muffins and Danish pastries are hard to refuse especially when accompanied with a choice of teas, coffee and piping hot chocolate. And all served in the finest china and silver.

Drive further down the main boulevards of Jaipur city and you come to a set of intricately carved arches, which divide the Old City from the New City. Once through the arches, your senses are immediately assaulted by the noisy onslaught of rickshaws, buffalo carts, taxis, bicycles, scooters, elephants and cars all jostling for space on the same road. Whistle blowing policemen, horn blowing cars, mooing cows and convincing street peddlars create a melodious harmony of ethnic sounds, which to the first time visitor to Jaipur, can be quite startling!

Hotel Overbooking – What Can You Do?

November 28, 2009 by stephotel

Hotels may offer excuses that they have to oversell to make up for the losses from the growing number of travelers who make reservations but never keep them. They may tell you that some guests did not check out as planned, or that certain rooms require repairs or renovations. Many states can now impose fines against hotels that regularly overbook. Unlike airlines, hotels have no right to confirm more rooms than they have available.

In very rare cases, two hotels may work together in bait and switch tactics, accepting your overbooking at one hotel so that you can be referred, at your expense, to a more expensive hotel down the street. The second hotel then shares a portion of the revenue with the first. If this happens to you, you should immediately file a complaint with the attorney general of the state in which the hotel is located.

If you have a confirmed or guaranteed reservation and you have met all of the conditions of the reservation, such as arriving on time, the hotel is required to take every reasonable step to take care of you.

When a hotel has overbooked, follow these suggestions to assist in getting a room.

Remain at the front desk and firmly demand a room. Do not agree to step aside so other guests can be checked in. This makes you a less pressing problem for the hotel. Standing your ground makes you more of a problem and thereby increases the chances of the hotel resolving your problem quickly to avoid a scene.

Ask immediately to speak with the front desk manager or the general manager – someone with the authority to make decisions to take care of you.

Don’t lose your temper. Instead, be polite but insistent. Regardless of the excuses you may be given, the best question you can ask over and over again is “I understand there’s an overbooking problem, but what will you do to get me a room right away?” Remember, this is not your fault and the hotel should never have let it happen.

Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want. Suggest that the hotel put you in a more expensive room or suite at the guaranteed room rate. The hotel might also provide you with additional discounts, restaurant vouchers, or other incentives. If any of these happen, always remember to check your credit card statements to be sure you were not charged the inflated rates and as always, keep your receipts.

Let the hotel know that you understand your rights. Write down names and titles of all the hotel staff you deal with on the issue, as well as the reasons or excuses they give you for the overbooking.

Be flexible and creative. Ask the manager if he or she has other options available, like staff rooms, rooms that are not yet made up, or even a rollaway bed inside a meeting room (at a greatly discounted rate, obviously).

You will have much stronger rights with a guaranteed reservation than with a confirmed one, since you have literally guaranteed payment for the room. If the hotel does not hold a room for you, it has breached its contract with you and must take all reasonable steps to secure you a similar room within the hotel or a comparable (or better) hotel nearby. The hotel may be required to pay for the first night’s lodging at a nearby hotel (called walking), provide free transportation to the other hotel, pay the difference in rates (if the other hotel is more expensive) for the remaining nights of your reservation and/or arrange a long-distance phone call to let your family and/or your office where you are now staying.

Many of these services may not be offered voluntarily, so be prepared to insist, politely but firmly, on fair compensation for the hotel’s overbooking mistake.

Robin Hood Revisited

November 27, 2009 by stephotel

I remember it so well…sitting excitedly in front of the TV and waiting, until finally the credits started rolling and the theme tune started up…”Robin Hood, Robin Hood, riding through the Glen, Robin Hood, Robin Hood, with his band of men.?/p>

Everyone will recognise that this is the theme tune to the famous 1950’s series of Robin Hood featuring Richard Greene and it was a staple of many children throughout the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s but its also become a favourite of my son (ever since I bought the DVD set) and it was because of his great interest that I recently took him away on a short break to see the real life backdrop to the legend.

So it was, that one sunny morning my son and I drove into Nottingham, checked into the hotel that I had booked for that night, deposited our small amount of luggage and headed out to see the sights.

The first port of call for our short break was, of course, the famous Nottingham Castle. Now the castle is not the medieval building that is always portrayed in every film but a still magnificent edifice dating back to the 17th century. There has actually been a series of fortifications on the site since the norman invasions and every version has had an historic past steeped in military engagements, however, the fondly imagined Sheriff of Nottingham’s medieval version was destroyed in the 1650’s and replaced with the current version. The castle itself though, is a fantastic place for kids on a short break, with rooms of armour and weapons, interactive displays and a medieval style playground. Underneath the castle, a series of extensive caverns and passages await the intrepid explorer and provide adventure and excitement for adult and child alike.

No short break to Nottingham would be complete without a visit to Sherwood Forest though and that was our next destination. Sherwood is now part of the protected Sherwood Country Park and is a thoroughly magnificent 450 acre forest. There are major points of interest within the forest such as the 800 year old ‘Major Oak?and the site of wandering longhorn cattle grazing freely in the forest, but the true wonder lies in the unspoiled natural setting itself. As you go deeper into the forest away from others, you capture a feeling for the ‘spirit of the wildwood?and can easily picture the outlaws of Robin Hood’s times inhabiting these secluded environs.

All in all, I must say that our visit to Nottingham was one of the best short breaks away that I have ever had; my son enjoyed himself immensely and there were a myriad other attractions that I have not yet mentioned. As a top children’s destination, Nottingham rates very highly and likewise, as a short break destination it is hard to beat…why not see for yourself?

Italian Hotel Reservations – Enjoy Your Trip!

November 27, 2009 by stephotel

According to the italian Tourism Board, there are about 40,000 hotels in Italy. That’s a lot to choose from when you’re traveling from overseas. Whether you’re planning to stay in a hotel in Venice or a hotel in rome, here’s what you should know when you make your Italian hotel reservations:

1. Pay your deposit – According to law, a hotel booking is valid upon payment of a deposit. Your deposit is refundable upon cancellation of your reservation at least 14 days in advance of your stay, or 30 days in advance if you are going during tourist season.

2. Time your trip – In cities and resorts, the off-season is considered November through March. April, May, September, and November are considered the off-season for ski resorts. Rates for a hotel in Venezia or Roma will be less during the off season.

3. Hotel ratings – The tourism bureau gives hotels ratings from one to five stars, with five stars signifying deluxe accommodations. Bed and breakfast accommodations are available throughout Italy, but they are not given ratings.

4. Day hotels – If you’re on the move and simply need a place to freshen up, Italy offers day hotels. With baths, showers, beauty salons, baggage checking, and private rooms, day hotels are often found in cities and near train stations.

After you’ve made your Italian hotel reservations, paid your deposit, and arrive at your hotel in Venice, your hotel in rome, or another Italian destination, it’s time to enjoy your vacation. The Italian Tourism Board provides these tips to help ensure that your vacation is the memorable experience you deserve:

* Avoid counterfeit goods – A new 2005 law imposes heavy fines on those who purchase counterfeit goods. If you’re looking for knockoffs with luxury labels, you may want to think twice. Purchasing such goods carries a fine of up to 10,000 Euros.

* Know the duty-free limits – The U.S. allows citizens returning from Italy to bring in up to $400 worth of products duty free. A duty charge of ten percent of the next $1,000 worth of goods will be assessed.

* No visa required – U.S. citizens staying in Italy fewer than 90 days do not need a visa.

* Registration required – Tourists are required to register with the police within three days of arrival. Hotels generally do this on behalf of their guests, but it’s wise to double check when making your Italian hotel reservations. If you’re staying in a private home or with friends, you should go to the nearest police station to register.

Discount Hotels May Be the Ticket to Your Dream Vacation

November 26, 2009 by stephotel

Everyone enjoys vacations. Vacations are an excuse to get away from work, school, and daily life. However, some people do not enjoy their vacations as much as others. One reason behind this is often the cost of the vacation itself. How can one enjoy a vacation when he or she is constantly worrying about paying for it? One can mitigate this problem by booking rooms at discount hotels. Hotel costs are a very large part of most vacations, and can sometimes be the single most expensive element of the vacation.

How does one find discount hotels? The process isnt very complicated at all. Simply searching for hotels online is one way to find the best deals. If hotels are offering discounts, they will want everyone to know. It is important to also book hotels in advance. Sometimes, hotels can have higher prices when a specific vacation spot is having a very successful year. However, if you book your hotel in advance, this wont be a problem for you. You can also occasionally bargain with the hotel manager for accommodation prices. Communicating your desires and being firm can take you a long way when searching for a hotel. Always remember that in the end, the hotel wants your business, so you have the upper hand.

Going for a discount hotel is also a good idea for those who are not vacationing on a limited budget. Everyone loves to save money, and staying in a discount hotel does not necessarily mean that the hotel has to be crummy. Also, consider the fact that if you are vacationing, you will hopefully not be spending all of your time in the hotel. I know many people get the bare minimum in a hotel for sleeping because they want to spend their money doing things at their vacation spot. This philosophy is often very helpful for people wanting to enjoy their vacation as much as they can. We all know the story of a family getting a very expensive hotel room, and then one of the family members just staying inside all day. That isnt the purpose of a vacation.

Another way to get discount hotels is through companies like AAA. AAA cards can sometimes give members savings of up to 10% on hotel costs. People who use credit cards that have point systems can also use reward points to apply towards a hotel stay. Some hotels that are offering discounts may even accept credit card points and AAA discounts. This means that you could be paying a significantly discounted price for a hotel, which would free up large amounts of money to spend on enjoying the vacation itself.

Vacations are great for the whole family, or just a couple who wants to get away. However, sometimes hotel costs can put a damper on the fun. This can be avoided by looking for the hotels that are most discounted, using reward points from credit cards and discounts from AAA, and being smart. After all, you arent going on vacation to stay in the best hotel possible, you are vacationing to see the sites and do fun, unique things that you havent done before. Saving money on hotels is the sure way to accomplish this goal.

What To Look For In A Hotel

November 25, 2009 by stephotel

You can trust established chains such as Marriott or Hilton

but there is so much on offer that it would be a shame to

miss out on the smaller or independent hotels as they may

be able to offer you something the larger chain brands can’t.

The Rating System

The star system was created to help guests judge how

good a hotel is. Star ratings symbolise the level of

standards a guest can expect and are recognised

worldwide. Ranging from 1 ?5, the quality of service,

amenities, size and condition of rooms and building, safety

and security, atmosphere, quality of food and drink, hotel

presence and efficiency of staff are judged.

1 Star

Practical accommodation. Don’t expect anything more than

the absolute basics. The shower room is likely to be down

the hall, but remember, it’s the cheapest accommodation. If

you’re looking for a bargain, and don’t mind not having

en-suite facilities, don’t hesitate to consider one-star hotels

?just check the room first. Go for one that offers clean

sheets and a nice neighbourhood. It may be cheap but you

don’t want to slum it next door to a crack den!

2 Star

Although many offer en-suite facilities you may find in some

hotels there is still a need to share the shower room down

the hall with other guests. You’ll have a colour television, a

comfortable bed, and a restaurant/dining room for breakfast

and dinner.

3 Star

Private bathrooms in the (usually smallish) room colour

television, occasionally even a mini bar, a phone, laundry

service (optional) and a more formal style of service along

with the opportunity for room service during certain times to

be expected.

4 Star

Four-star hotels are spacious and have the creature

comforts with a touch more luxury, including private baths in

addition to a strong emphasis on food and beverage,

24-hour room service and a dry cleaning service available.

More often in well situated locations.

5 Star

Simply the best. The interiors will be of the highest

standards. Opulent, stylish and of absolute luxury. Nothing

is too much for guests. Exceptional comfort, 24 hour room

service, luxury amenities, for example, spas or star rated

restaurants serving superb cuisine are the norm. The

concierge will be only too happy to get you want at whatever

time of the day, (so long as it’s legal). You will feel very well

cared for by professional, attentive staff providing a flawless

service. This is the kind of luxury dreams are made of.

The star definitions should be treated as a general guide to

what you should expect from a star rated hotel as there is

yet no definitive worldwide standardisation available.

Because of this, it can sometimes be abused and you could

find yourself booking into a hotel that just doesn’t come up

to what you believe to be adequate for its rating.

Due to the lack of consistency in hotel ratings around the

world you could find yourself staying in, for example, a

three-star hotel abroad which may be better than a

three-star hotel in your native country. But be warned, it can

go either way and you could find yourself in a less than

desirable hotel with exactly the same star rating.

Keep in mind it is your right to view a room before you

commit to staying in it. Ask to do so.

Recommendation

If you’re thinking of booking into a hotel, but don’t know what

it’s like, http://www.gate14.co.uk suggests you take the following

steps.

Ask trusted friends with similar tastes to recommended

somewhere

Alternatively, search the name of your intended hotel and

read impartial hotel reviews from people who have stayed in

the accommodation.

Reviews can be seen at Holiday Watchdog. It’s free to use

and you can even submit a review of your own.

If you would like to see special offers in accommodation, go
